ADULT ROWING: AGES 19-90+

At Hanlan, our mission is to inspire and support everyone on their rowing journey.   To do this, we offer a variety of programs to match all levels of experience and interest. Whether you’re a newbie rower who wants to commune with nature while paddling along Leslie Street Spit or an elite-level athlete who seeks to race competitively across North America, we have the program for you.

PROGRAMS

U23/Senior competitive MEMBERSHip

The Senior/U23 Competitive program is for university rowers, recent graduates and highly competitive adult rowers ages 19+ who race 2000 metres. Athletes must commit to racing and to attending practices (up to 6 practices/week).

LEARN-TO-ROW PROGRAMS

In Hanlan’s fun and welcoming Learn-to-Row 101 program you’ll learn the basics of rowing technique, boat handling, water safety and working together as a crew. No experience required. In our Learn-to-Row 201 Program you will build on these skills and develop even more confidence to advance to Hanlan’s other programs.

HANLAN ROWING LEAGUE

For adults who have complete our Learn-to-Row Program or who have some experience, the eight-week Hanlan Rowing League teaches participants how to train, and race in a sweep rowing boat two evenings per week. Afterwards, rowers relax by the docks at our weekly club social.

MASTERS SPORT MEMBERSHIP

This program is for adults looking to build fitness and rowing skills while having a FUN time with like-minded adults ages 19-80+.

It is the natural next step after Hanlan's Learn-to-Row or Rowing League program, designed to be flexible while supporting your rowing journey.

MASTERS COMPETITIVE MEMBERSHIP

The Masters Competitive program is designed for experienced rowers ages 21-80+ who want to train seriously with first-rate coaches four mornings per week in preparation for 1000 metre regattas, Fall head races, endurance events or to achieve individual goals.

Afternoon DISTANCE ROWING - GUESTS WELCOME!

Afternoon distance rowing is an opportunity for our members (and non-members) to row longer distances. The group leaves the dock at 1pm on Thursdays in open water and coastal shells. Distances vary.

Guest rowers pay $30/session (plus rowing association annual fees unless paid at another club).

FAQs

ADULTS, SENIORS, MASTERS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Masters are adult rowers who are 18+.  Some masters rowers compete at masters regattas; others don’t compete at all.  We use the terms “adult” and “masters” interchangeably.

Seniors are generally undergraduate or graduate students, ages 18+, with some competitive experience. At Hanlan, we refer to these rowers as “U23/Seniors.”

SCULLING OR SWEEP ROWING?

Sculling: Two oars per rower, rowing in a one-, two-or four-person boat (aka “shell”).  Delivers an immediate feeling of connectivity to the water, the boat, and your own body’s movements.

Sweep Rowing: One oar per rower, rowing in a two-, four- or eight-person shell. Teamwork, camaraderie, and moving in sync with fellow rowers is the name of the game.
