Meet our Coaches AND STAFF

Hanlan Boat Club is supported by a team of coaches who bring diverse rowing backgrounds into teaching the sport.

Coach Kirsten Ryan

Kirsten Ryan, HEAD ADULT COACH

Kirsten is a passionate coach who brings decades of experience, humour and humility to the coach boat. She began her rowing and coaching at Winnipeg Rowing Club over 25 years ago. While in Winnipeg, she coached many levels of rowing, including adaptive rowing, and also served as general manager of the Prairie Fire Rowing Club in Winnipeg from 1999 to 2001, starting that club from the ground up with the assistance of the Foundation 2000plus. Kirsten has been a member and volunteer at Hanlan Boat Club since 2011. She has experience coaching adults and junior rowers and has prepared athletes for various regattas including the Head of the Charles Regatta. Kirsten believes she has as much to learn from all athletes as they do from her - and approaches coaching as a partnership toward each athletes' goal.

Kirsten was named as Row Ontario’s 2022 Learn-To-Row/Recreational Coach of the Year in 2022. Kirsten may be reached at kirsten@hanlanboatclub.ca.

Coach Paul Charuk

Paul CHaruk, Director of operations
lead coach, HANLAN ROWING LEAGUE

Paul learned to row in high school on the competitive Junior team at Durham Rowing Club. He loves introducing the sport to as many people as possible. Paul finds rowing to be such an intense yet graceful sport, and truly the ultimate team building/player sport. The most rewarding part of coaching for him is watching the lightbulb learning moments and seeing the joy on the crews' faces when they push hard and have a great row. Paul’s works primarily outside the coach boat as Hanlan’s Director of Operations; however, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings you will find him back behind the megaphone coaching athletes as part of Hanlan Rowing League. Paul may be reached at operations@hanlanboatclub.ca.

CODY TOPS, ASSISTANT JUNIOR COACH

Cody learned to row in Newfoundland, and transitioned into coaching after competing at the Canada Games in 2017. What excites him most about rowing at Hanlan is how much exposure you can have, be it competitions, community and learning experiences.

Eric has been rowing at Hanlan since 1984 and continues to train and compete as a masters rower. He has coached LTR, high school, university, masters and juniors. Eric enjoys sharing his passion and knowledge of the sport and aims to bring out the best in his athletes.

Bella Jachymek

Bella learned to row as a junior at Argonaut Rowing Club and now rows at Washington State University. What excites her the most about coaching at Hanlan is the close-knit community.
