There was lots of action over the weekend of June 5, 6 and 7 for many of the athletes who row for Hanlan Boat Club or who row for affiliated clubs located at Hanlan Boat Club.
Hanlan's Coastal rowers were in action on Lake Scucog in a regatta hosted by Durham Boat Club offering 10 km, 1/2 marathon and full marathon events. The men's crew of JC Marley, Hugh Fletcher, Eric , and Brian Singleton with Brian's son in the cox seat were in the half-marathon.
The three-day regatta of the Canadian Secondary School Regatta Association was held on Martindale Pond in St Catharines. Two Hanlan athletes rowing as Leaside High School - Shannon McIlhone and Emma Randall - advanced from the heats and then placed fourth in the semi final of the Senior Women Double. Affiliated club - Upper Canada College - had 5 boats that advanced to finals. UCC's Senior Men Eight placed first. Two crews were second and another two placed fourth. Havergal College's sole boat in finals - Senior Women 63 Kg with cox - placed 2nd. Other Hanlan junior athletes who trained for the regatta were unable to compete as they couldn't obtain approval from their schools to participate.
And last, but not least, Sunday was Hanlan's annual Open House. A few hardy souls showed up to try rowing for the first time. By mid-afternoon stiff, easterly winds shut down all possibility of putting "newbies" on the water. Many thanks to Deb Cumming and her volunteers for organizing this event.
