Ontario Masters Championships were held on the north course of the International Flatwater Centre in Welland on Sunday, July 13. Despite the course's name, the morning events were held in quite windy conditions, at times with white caps rolling down the racing lanes. Thundershowers erupted at the lunch break but eventually they stopped, the wind abated somewhat and all races were completed.
The provincial champions for Hanlan are Jeanette Herrle in the Women's Lightweight Single, Harry Vanderlugt in the Men's H+ Single, and Deb Cumming and Susan Wright in the Women's D+ Double. Hanlan entered 23 crews in all with 9 of those crews finishing in the top three of their respective events.
Second place finishes were rowed by Tristan Armesto in the Men's Lightweight Single as well as Jeanette Herrle and Jennifer Dickie in the Women's Lightweight Double. Both these crews were first in straight time but demoted when time handicaps for age were applied. Also placing second were Craig Lauder in the Men's E-F+ Single and Eric Szonyi and Jerome Hass in the Men's C Double.
Eric Szonyi and John Sherrick placed third in their respective singles races.
A special thank you to head coach Michael Sasi who spent the whole day with the masters team after a long day at Saturday's regatta with the junior and senior athletes. And he then drove the heavily loaded trailer home to Hanlan.
