The Ontario Masters Championship Regatta was held on Sunday July 14 on the North Course of the International Flat Water venue in Welland. It was a blistering hot day with relentless heat and sun along with absolutely calm water. A bridge just before the start provided a blissful moment of shady relief for crews waiting to enter the blocks. Advanced preparations for the Pan Am Games were evident with new buildings open for the regatta office, spectators, and officials' towers. Vast expanses along the canal banks are sporting tender grass plants that were being watered. Hanlan Boat Club covered itself with glory winning 7 gold medals from the possible 21 crew entries. This was a conversion rate of 33%, the best results by Hanlan Masters in my memory which is admittedly getting long. Leading the way were Harry Vanderlugt, as he has done in earlier regattas this season, and Jeanette Herle for the women.
Harry won two gold - the Mens Lightweight Single and the G Single - as well as a bronze with Kelly Brigley in the Mixed Double. Jeanette Herle had two golds - first in the Lightweight Single and again with Kelly Brigley in the Womens Lightweight Double.
Other gold medallists were Susan Wright and Deb Cumming in the Womens C-D + Double; Jerome Hass in the Mens AA-B single; and Steve Roedde in the Mens E-F single. Jennifer Dickie won silver with Tristan Armesto in a Mixed Double.
Other crews rowed well and continued to develop race experience and expertise. As always a big thank you to Head Coach Michael Sasi who put in a second long day beside the water. (The CORA Final regatta was held on the previous day.)
