The Near North Classic regatta held on Sunday July 6 on Little Lake in Midland was a first time event in the newly launched Trillium Masters Series of regattas. Spearheaded by Peter Somerwill from Brock University, the Series is designed to provide more opportunities for Masters to gain competition experience. It followed on the heels of the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta held in mid-June in Welland. The regatta was held on a buoyed six-lane course with a fixed start and was well organized by Georgian Bay Rowing Club. Hopefully next year, the regatta will be better known and attract even more participation.
Although there were fewer entries than hoped for, the nine clubs racing had a good competition and some challenging conditions with a stiff, cross-wind hitting part of the course. Harry Vanderlugt was the only entry from Hanlan. Harry won gold in both the Lightweight Men Single and Single Men H+.
