Seventeen Hanlan Boat Club Masters scullers took to the water at the Tony Biernacki Sr. Memorial Regatta held on the north course of the Welland International Flatwater Course on Saturday June 13. At this, the first regatta of the season, the Masters were supported by coaches Kelly Brigley, Jeanette Herrle, and Iain Wilson.
Top finish of the day for Hanlan belonged to Jerome Haas and Eric Szonyi who placed first in the Men's AA-A-B-C Double. Earlier in the day, Haas had placed second in the Men's D Single while Richard MacFarlane placed sixth.
Megan Lewicki and Lee Sela, racing for the first time as Masters, were second in the Women's AA-A-B 2x. In the Women's C Double, Jennifier Dickie and Jeanette Herrle placed fourth in the final. They had previously raced in heats to win a spot in the double. Also in the heats in this event were Nicola Worsfold and Tracey Clingen.
In the Women's C Single Jeanette completed her busy day with a third place finish followed by Angela Desand in fourth. Another fourth place for Hanlan was won by Tristan Armesto in the Men's Lightweight Single.
John Sherrick, a G sculler, had a strong race in the Men's Single to finish first in straight time. However...there were no other male G scullers at the regatta so John was put in the Men's H single where he had to contend with a handicap of nearly a minute against other perennially, strong competitors. This moved him down to 4th in the final results.
Congratulations to all the Hanlan athletes who got their oars wet at the opening regatta of the 2015 season.
