Gustavison and Matthews honoured by DDRA

At the 130th Canada Day Regatta held on Centre Island in Torontto, the Dominion Day Regatta Association presented Victor Gustavison and Nick Matthews with the Ken Lane Special Achievement Award for their significant and exemplary contribution.  The last, and only other Hanlan member to receive this award was the club's founder - Sam Craig - in 1988.   The following is a reprint of the story published in the regatta program.

Victor Gustavison and Nick Matthews, both from Hanlan Boat Club in Toronto, are the recipients of this year's Ken Lane Award.

Both men are Masters rowers with about 30 years' experience each in single and double sculls with some earlier experience at the university level in London, Ontario for Victor and in England for Nick.  The highlight of their racing accomplishments was winning both the Henley and Canadian National Masters Double in their age group in 2003.

Vic and Nick are long-time members of Hanlan Boat Club where they have always been available to help make the Club run smoothly.  Vic is the Club's Past President and has also served as President, Vice-President, and Secretary.  He currently tries to keep up with the boat repair demands of Hanlan's busy fleet.  Nick was Club Captain for many years before taking on the position of President.  He is steering the biggest challenge presently facing Hanlan - the need for a new boathouse and even a possible relocation.  Under both their stewardships, the membership and activity at Hanlan has increased exponentially.  Both men have also donated countless hours coaching in Hanlan's Youth Watersports Camp initiative.  The program is designed to foster rowing participation by youth from our neighbouring communities.

Since they both joined Hanlan (which is now pushing more than 25 years ago), both Victor and Nick have turned out annually to help at the Dominion Day Regatta.  They turn up for the Regatta early in the morning in safety boats from the Club and stay until the last race has made its way down the course.  They have cheerfully fished many a paddler and rower out on the water on the Centre Island course.  And in-between times, they have treated all the competitors with good humour and grace while watching out for the safety of all.

The Dominion Day Regatta Association is pleased to present the Ken Lane Special Achievement Award to Victor Gustavison and Nick Matthews, for their significant and exemplary contributions to the DDRA.
