Eleven Canadian National team crews raced over the past weekend in World Cup II held in Aiguebelette, France. The beautiful lake, surrounded by mountains, offered perfect rowing conditions,. Seven of Canada's crews qualified for A finals.
Two silver medals were won by the Women's 8+ and the Women's 4-. The Women's 8 had a spectacular race, roaring out to a strong start and holding the lead for over three-quarters of the 2,000 metres. In the end the American boat just nosed them out of a first place. It was the closest any crew has come to besting the strong American crew in recent years.
The Men's quad had a very strong race and won bronze in a tightly contested event. The proverbial cowbell separated them from the Chinese crew in fourth place. Rowing in three seat was Michael Braithwaite who is an alumnus of the University of Toronto and Hanlon's Senior rowing programs.
