This year's Nicholson Head of the Martindale held in St. Catharines on Saturday May 9th offered absolutely ideal conditions for the three Hanlan scullers who were ready to compete in this early season event. The race, open only to single scullers, was renamed this year to honour the late Jack Nicholson who has been one of the cornerstones of Ridley Grad Boat Club for decades.
Mic Malowany, in his first race since returning to compete under the Hanlan Boat Club banner, finished second in the open men's race. Also placing second was Eric Szonyi in the Veteran Men's race. It should be noted that his second place was after time handicaps were applied. In straight time Eric had the fastest time of the day. John Sherrick was 7th in the Veteran's Men's Race although his time was the fastest among men age 70 and over. John also took the photo accompanying this article.
Congrats to all for some good early season racing at a time of year when most scullers feel they aren't ready to compete.
