Steve Roedde had the Hanlan performance of the day at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships (CIRC) held on Sunday, February 2 at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. Steve handily won the Veteran Lightweight Men's event. He also qualified, as he did last year, for the World Indoor Championships to be held in Boston on February 15th,2014. Over the course of the day's competition, 9 competitors made this qualifying standard in their respective events. The four with the fastest time relative to the standard will receive free airfare to Boston. Other strong performances included David Fishman in the Senior Masters Men who finished second. In the Junior B Lightweight Boys, an event with a field of 48 competitors, Hanlan's David Janssen was 4th followed by Oliver Couttolenc in 9th.
Hanlan juniors competing at CIRC numbered 11 this year led by coach Lauren Brown. Lauren has been running a very active and varied training program this winter for Hanlan's juniors with the goal of being prepared to train hard and race during the 2014 on-water season. The CIRC was an important and valuable learning experience for all the young athletes, many of whom were there for the first time.
Hanlan senior scullers, Alex Soutter and Ian Finlay, were in the stands coaching 25 junior boys from Upper Canada College, one of Hanlan's resident clubs. Simon Mackenzie was 1st in the Junior B Boys race. Our other resident clubs, Havergal College and University of Toronto, had 23 and 11 athletes respectively entered. Kenlyee Merritt from U of T won the Coxswain's Mens event which was raced over 1000 metres rather than the usual 2000 metres.
For those interested in trivia, the total number of athletes who row from the Hanlan boathouse who were at CIRC this year was an impressive 81 - 78 athletes, 3 coaches and 3 working as officials.
