Hanlan’s resident clubs had tremendous representation at the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championship held at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga on Sunday February 3, 2013. In all, 17 girls from Havergal College, 16 boys from Upper Canada College, and 5 athletes from University of Toronto were among the competitors pulling on the ergs over a distance of 2,000 metres. Many of these athletes compete with Hanlan in the summer months. It was great to see Ali Zimmerman who has coached Hanlan Juniors in the past sweating it out in the coxswain’s race over 1,000 metres. She tried to tell me she was too old for this but I wasn’t buying it!
A special congratulations to Graham Buchan and Patrick Watt who were first and second in the Junior A Boys Lightweight event with very impressive times. Emily Donaldson from U of T was second in the coxswain’s race.
Also competing over the weekend was Harry Vanderlugt, one of Hanlan’s long-time Masters rowers. Harry won gold in 3 events at the Ontario Masters Cross Country Ski Championships. He was dominant in his age group in the 10 k. classic, 10 k. skate, and 20 k. skate races. Congratulations, Harry.
