Seven crews rowing out of Hanlan did the Club proud at the 49th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. The regatta held on Saturday October 20 and Sunday October 21 had a field of 2,031 boats competing among the various categories. Competition was stiff as always. Fortunately heavy rains on the Friday night didn't affect the weekend's racing though it did seriously flood a parking lot and the vendors' tent.
In the Youth Fours Men Upper Canada College, which rows out of Hanlan, finished second a mere 2.13% behind the winner. The crew were Graham Buchan, Charlie Walker, Harris Sheldon, Patrick Watt in stroke and Daniel Hong (cox). Hanlan's entry of Harrison Vincent, Malcolm McKenzie, Trevor Thorburn, Justin Fong in stroke, and Aaron Ho (cox) finished 11th, 7.35% behind the winner. The performance of both crews have guaranteed the two clubs entries in the event at next year's regatta.
In Youth Fours Women, the Hanlan crew of Lexi Ensor, Maddie Harlow, Shannon Dowling, Julia Malowany in stroke and cox Nadia Munk finished 62nd in a deep field of 85 boats.
Hanlan had 2 entries in the Mens Club Single. Despite a 10 second penalty, Alex Soutter finished 4th, guaranteeing himself an entry in next year's regatta. Steve Malinas, in his first head race ever, finished 43rd out of the 64 boats.
In Masters Men Double (40+), Jeff Alex and Eric Szonyi rowed to a 13th place finish, 7.98% behind the winner. Their results put them in the group that will be drawn first after the guaranteed inclusion group for the 2013 regatta.
The University of Toronto Lightweight Womens Coxed Four placed 4th in its division, just 2.85% behind the winning crew from Western, thus earning a guaranteed entry for 2013. The athletes were Megan Lewicki, Jenn Seidel, Kate Sauks, Kaitlin Nay in stroke, and Margherita Braga, cox.
Congratulations to all the crews for their results and dedication.
