MASTERS Competitive Program

The Hanlan Competitive Summer Masters Programme is open only to athletes who intend to compete at summer regattas. All others are very welcome - indeed encouraged - to join the Non-Competitive Rowing Programme.

Key Dates to Remember

Sunday, May 9th 2010 This is the official start of the 2010 Hanlan rowing season for Competitive Masters Athletes. If you would like to join our group for some good competitive rowing please contact Robert Watering: head_coach at hanlanboatclub.ca All athletes are asked to complete the Club Application and Waiver as well as the Senior Competitive Information forms. Fee payment is due in full prior to rowing, as is waiver submission and erg test score (witnessed) submission.

All competitive athletes must complete an ergometer test score between April 24, 2010 and the start of their rowing at Hanlan Boat Club. The erg test must be witnessed by either a Hanlan coach or another competitive athlete within the 2010 Hanlan Competitive Programme. Master's competitive athletes' erg test distance is 1000 metres. The ergometer test must be completed and all fees and forms must be received prior to use of any equipment in the Hanlan Boat Club competitive equipment pool.

Practice times: Monday to Friday 5:45 a.m. (until the end of May, then 5:30 a.m.); and Sunday 8:30 am; Secondary Rows start May 18th and are approximately 45' after the end of the first row Monday to Friday.

Saturday, June 5th and Sunday, June 6th 2010 - Final Crew Selection
Selection will be determined by results of the 1000 metre ergometer test, on the water rowing ability, level of experience, and ability to work effectively in a competitive team environment. A demonstrated respect for all fellow athletes and coaches, as well as general sportsmanship are important considerations in the selection process

Members may join in any time after this date, however crew selection will begin immediately with the goal to have it completed by mid June. No prior racing experience is necessary, however intention to race this summer is a prerequisite.

The Masters Competitive Program is for women and men who are 27 years or older, who race. There are approximately 60 members evenly divided between Sweep (one oar per rower) and Sculling (two oars per rower). The Sweep Program is rowed in fours and eights while the Sculling Program is rowed in doubles and singles. The club provides all boats except singles which are privately owned and stored, for a fee, in the boat house. Coaching is provided by the Club. Most of the Masters Competitive Program rows in the morning at 6:00am or earlier except in April when the rowing is in the early evening.
The season starts for sculling in April and for sweep in June and goes until mid October.
There are approximately 6 regattas in the summer within a 2 hour drive of Toronto. These races are 1000 m. on a straight Olympic style course. In the fall there are 3-4 head races which are approximately 4km and usually on a winding river course. Races are by age categories. All ages from 27 to 73 are represented at Hanlan Boat Club.
If you have not rowed before, you should consider taking our Learn to Row Program and then join the Recreational Program. These are Sweep Programs. If you are particularly interested in sculling, a good way to start is by taking our Hanlan beginner Sculling Weekend Clinic or by attending one of the sculling schools and then joining our Recreational Program in the training singles and recreational doubles.
