Learn to Row Program
How will you learn to row?
You will be taught in rowing shells - boats that are similar to those that you see in Olympic competitions. That is they have long oars in outriggers which stick out from the sides of a narrow hull, the seats are on rollers and your feet are in shoes that are loosely attached to the boat. For "sweep" rowing which is what we teach, each rower has one oar. There are 4 or 8 rowers in each boat plus a coxswain who steers the boat. The other type of rowing is "sculling" in which each rower has two oars with either one, two or four rowers per boat.
At the beginning of the stroke the knees are bent at 90 degrees, the arms are straight and the rower is leaning toward the stern. A full stroke involves straightening the knees, extending the back and pulling the oar handle into the body. The hands are then lowered which lifts the oar out of the water and the oar is turned so that the blade is parallel with the water and the rower returns to the starting position. Rowing is a sport which involves all muscle groups in the body, building strength, endurance and flexibility.
The appeals of rowing are many: being on the water and away from the city, the fun of making a very streamlined boat go quickly, the pleasure of rowing with friends and feeling every one pulling together and the boat moving well, the fun of learning a new physical skill and watching your fitness improve.
Rowing is a sport which is gentle to the body especially the joints and is pursued by all ages, from high school to eighty years of age.

What happens in our Learn to Row Program?
This is a program that introduces you to the sport of rowing.
The sessions are not workouts, rather skill developing sessions. You will be taught how to handle the boat, both in and out of the water, beginning with the basics. The emphasis is on learning the rowing stroke. All equipment is provided by the Club. You will have a coach with you at all times in a "safety/coach boat". If you wish to continue rowing after you finish the learn to row program you may join the Hanlan Recreational Program.
Requirements
Very modest physical fitness
Be able to swim
No boating experience required
What and where is Hanlan Boat Club?
The Club has been operating for over 20 years. Initially there was high school rowing and subsequently junior and senior competitive rowing and masters rowing. Masters are 27 years and older. Current club masters who race range in ages up to 73 years of age. The emphasis has been on competitive racing and more recently on recreational rowing. The Club is a bare bones club with only boat storage facilities and no club house. We are primarily interested in rowing and are not a club for extensive social activities. To find the Club follow Cherry Street south to Unwin Avenue left to Regatta Rd. Rowing is on Lake Ontario in the large bay created by the Leslie Street Spit. (Tommy Thompson Park) See Directions
What is the cost?
The Learn to Row Program costs $333.00 (includes HST). Hanlan will apply $250 of the Learn To Row fee towards a recreational membership, so for an additional $225( plus HST) you can join the club and be a part of the recreational program. This is a great incentive to continue rowing at Hanlan and is not offered by many rowing clubs in the area.
